I SPEND THE EARLY PART of my Monday morning putting the borrowed car to good use. Since I have the week off from school I take advantage of the free time and go to an ATM to check the balance of my account and see more money in than I’ve ever seen next to my name. Next, I set off on getting the bills paid. It’s an unbelievable feeling to walk into a place and pay off the debts that are looming over my head. I pay off all the past due bills. When I finally walk away with the girls, I don’t want any reason to look back. I guess that’s my way of severing all ties.

I find a small café with free Wi-Fi, order a sandwich, and go to work looking up attorneys who handle custody cases. After making a handful of phone calls, I have three appointments booked this week. One tomorrow and two more on Wednesday. Just as I’m about to leave, my phone rings.

“Hey, how’s Hawaii? Miss me?” I ask my best friend with a smile in my voice.

“Not really and boring as shit. My parents have signed all of us up for all these family bonding adventures. I spent yesterday exploring a cave with my parents while my mom asked me fifty questions about my love life. Ugh.” Jonah sighs into the phone. “I called to see if you got the girls okay and to see if the little monsters burnt down my house,” Jonah says. I knew he is kidding. He loves my sisters like they’re his own.

“Yeah, we picked them up yesterday morning and—”

“Wait. What? We? Who the hell is we?” Jonah barks through the phone.

Shit. I hadn’t told him about Cooper asking me to stay a week with him. Last I had spoken with Jonah, this was a weekend thing.

“Um, well. My weekend job kind of got extended.”

I was met with a long pause before he spoke again. This time, his voice is lower as if he doesn’t want anyone around him to hear. “You’re still with him? Where are the girls?”

Jonah knows me too well to think I would ever take the girls back to our mom’s house. Not without me being there.

“They’re, uh, with me.” I close my eyes as I wait for the yelling to start. I’m surprised when it doesn’t. Jonah’s quiet again, making the sound of movement the only thing I can hear. A door closes in the background before Jonah’s voice is back to normal. “The girls are with you? What the hell is going on, Aaron? I thought it was a two-day job.”

Job.

The word sits heavy on my heart. He isn’t wrong. It is a job, a job I’m getting paid for, a job that will be over and done within five days. Only five more days and I’ll be free with more money than I’ve ever had in my life. I should be relieved. My stomach clenches and I quickly push the feelings aside.
